How To Make A Balloon Topiary Ball – Balloon Decorations

Balloon Topiary Ball

Balloons make everything seem more magical and fun! Balloon Topiary Balls are an excellent way to add more balloons to any occasion; from birthday parties to weddings, holidays, and celebrations, balloons elicit excitement and joy.

What Is A Balloon Topiary Ball

A balloon topiary ball is a cluster of 8-12 balloons twisted together to make the shape of a ball. Sometimes a balloon topiary ball is called a balloon party ball or simply a topiary balloon. Whatever the name they are a staple of balloon decorations. Once you have mastered this skill of twisting balloons into a balloon topiary ball you will find their uses are seemingly endless.

Balloon Topiary Balls can be used to make balloon topiaries, they can be used as the base for many balloon decorations (such as balloon trees), or they can simply be used as balloon balls.

Tip: For smaller balloon topiary balls use less balloons (8 balloons), and for larger balloon topiary balloon balls use more balloons (12 balloons).

How To Make A Balloon Topiary Ball

Things You Will Need

  • (8-12) balloons*
  • hand pump or helium
  • ribbon (optional or if using helium)
  • weight (if using helium)

*The size of the balloons will be determined by the size of the balloon topiary ball you are making. For smaller table top balloon topiary balls, you might use 5″ balloons. For larger or helium filled balloon topiary balls, you should use 9″, 11″ or 12″ balloons depending on your design.

Inflate Balloons

Inflate two balloons sized to 5-1/2″ (14 cm)*. For more information on how to size your balloons check out my post Best Way To Size A Balloon here.

*The correct size to size the balloons will be determined by both the size of the balloon and the size of your design. For this example, I’m using 11″ balloons, sized to 5-1/2″ (14 cm).

For information on balloon sizing with a balloon hand pump, check out my post How To Size A Balloon Using A Balloon Hand Pump here.

While holding the first balloon, inflate the second balloon making sure not to let the first balloon lose any air.

Twist Balloons Into Duplets

Twist your balloons into duplets. If you need more information on how to twist balloons into a duplet, check out my post How To Make A Balloon Duplet here.

If using helium make sure you have a plan after inflation so they don’t just fly away. You will need a balloon weight or a way to secure them while you inflate the rest of the balloons for your balloon topiary.

Tip: To keep helium balloons from floating to the ceiling while you are making your balloon topiary ball, place them in a balloon bag to keep them protected and safe until you are ready to assemble the balloon topiary ball. For more information about balloon bags, refer to my post The Best Way To Transport Inflated Balloons here.

Twist Duplets Together

Begin twisting your duplets together. Make sure to twist each duplet several times around to lock them into place.

Again if using helium you will need to secure the helium filled balloons so they don’t fly away.

Continue Adding Duplets

Continue adding duplets until all of your balloons have been used. Make sure to shift the balloons around until you get the shape you want. This can be a little tricky and may take a little practice.

Attach Ribbon (If Using)

Attach the ribbon to the balloons by tying the ribbon around the balloon topiary ball.

For extra pizzazz, add extra ribbons to the balloon topiary ball.

DO NOT USE A SAFETY PIN OR ANY OTHER SHARP OBJECT TO SECURE YOUR BALLOONS!!!! Sharp object and balloons do not play well together.

Attach Balloons To Weight (if using helium)

Don’t forget to use Smart Balloon Practices and attach your helium filled balloons to a weight. For more information about Smart Balloon Practices, check out my post here.

For more information about balloon weights, refer to my post Balloon Weights: How To Use, Make, And How Heavy They Need To Be here.

Enjoy!

You have yourself a beautiful balloon topiary ball.
